For 15 years, Amazon’s Fire tablets asked buyers to give up one thing: the Google Play Store. That era is over. Amazon has launched its new Alexa Tablet lineup, and for the first time, its tablets ship with Google Mobile Services and full Play Store access built in.

This is not just a rebrand. The new tablets drop the Fire name, adopt an aluminium unibody design, and put Alexa Plus at the centre of the experience. If you have been waiting for a simple everyday Android tablet, Amazon just made the most interesting argument in years.

The new Alexa Tablet lineup at a glance

Amazon announced four devices: three main tablets and two kids models. All of them went up for order immediately and started shipping on October 14.

    • Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: The flagship with a 12-inch display and optional anti-glare coating.
    • Alexa Tablet 11: The mid-size option with an 11-inch screen and all-day battery.
    • Alexa Tablet 8: The compact 8.7-inch model for reading and casual use.
    • Kids Tablet 8 and Kids Tablet 11: Built for children in two age groups, 3+ and above 6, each with a year of Amazon Kids+ included.

Amazon also sells the tablets at Best Buy and Target in the US. The Fire brand, which defined Amazon’s tablet line since 2011, is being retired in favour of the Alexa name.

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: the one to watch

The 12 Pro is where Amazon aimed its best hardware. The spec sheet holds up well against mid-range Android tablets:

    • 12-inch display, 2800 x 1840 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 3:2 aspect ratio suited to documents and web pages.
    • MediaTek Dimensity 8400 chipset, built on a 4nm process with eight cores.
    • 128GB storage with 8GB RAM on the standard model. The Nanomatte version adds a 256GB plus 16GB configuration.
    • 8MP front camera and 13MP rear camera for video calls and scanning.
    • 9,000mAh battery rated for up to 16 hours of use.
    • Optional Pro Keyboard and Pro Pen accessories for productivity work.

The standout option is the Nanomatte finish. It is an anti-glare coating similar to what Apple offers on some iPad Pro models, and it matters if you read or work near windows and overhead lights. The standard model starts at $499.99 (roughly Rs 44,000), the Nanomatte version costs $50 more, and the top 256GB plus 16GB configuration goes up to $679.99 (roughly Rs 60,000). The Pro Keyboard is priced at $149.99 and the Pro Pen at $89.99.

Tablet 11 and Tablet 8: the everyday pair

Most buyers will likely look at the smaller two, and the numbers make sense for daily use:

    • Alexa Tablet 11: 11-inch screen with 2560 x 1600 resolution at 90Hz, 8GB RAM, and 64GB or 128GB storage. The 6,500mAh battery is rated for up to 15 hours.
    • Alexa Tablet 8: 8.7-inch screen, 4GB or 8GB RAM options, 64GB or 128GB storage, and a 4,600mAh battery rated for up to 14 hours.

Both run on the same MediaTek 8189 eight-core chip. Amazon is also keeping its lock-screen advertising model, so cheaper versions with ads on the lock screen will be available, just like past Fire tablets.

The kids models come with 64GB storage across the board. The Kids Tablet 8 limits RAM to 4GB, while the Kids Tablet 11 gets 8GB. Both include a year of Amazon Kids+, the subscription service with books, videos, and games for ages 3 to 12. The Kids Tablet 8 starts at $229.99 and the Kids Tablet 11 at $329.99.

Google Play Store access changes everything

Every Fire tablet until now ran Fire OS, a forked version of Android without Google Mobile Services. You could sideload the Play Store if you knew the tricks, but mainstream buyers were stuck with Amazon’s Appstore catalogue.

That friction is gone. Out of the box, the Alexa Tablets give you:

    • The full Google Play Store with apps, games, and subscriptions that work normally.
    • Google apps that were missing or clunky on Fire OS, from Google Maps to YouTube to Google Drive.
    • Standard Android app behaviour, so banking apps and work tools that check for Google certification should work without hacks.

For years, anyone asking me for a tablet got the same advice: buy a Samsung or an iPad, unless you only want a cheap streaming screen. With Play Store access, an Amazon tablet becomes a real Android tablet recommendation.

Alexa Plus and the Kindle reading mode

Amazon is pushing Alexa Plus as the reason to choose its tablets over generic Android ones. The assistant gets a dedicated home screen shortcut, and the integration goes deeper than a voice button, with the promise of handling everyday tasks across Amazon’s services.

One feature stands out for readers. The Kindle app on the new tablets has a dedicated reading mode that mutes notifications, reduces blue light, and extends battery life. For anyone who reads on their tablet in bed or on the commute, that is a small change that gets used every single day.

Why this matters where Google stumbled

Google has been trying to make a great everyday Android tablet since 2012. It got close with the Nexus 7, a 7-inch tablet at $199 that many still remember fondly. Then came the Nexus 10, the Nexus 9, the metal Pixel C with its keyboard, and the ChromeOS-powered Pixel Slate, which lost its audience because the software felt wrong.

Amazon understood something Google kept missing. Everyday buyers want a simple, well-priced screen for video, reading, kids, and light work, with the apps they already use. With Play Store access, a clean aluminium build, and pricing that undercuts premium Android tablets, the Alexa lineup is the clearest answer to that brief in a long time.

    India pricing and availability

Amazon has not announced India pricing or a launch date for the Alexa Tablet range yet. Pricing for India will be announced closer to launch. Going by US prices, the Tablet 12 Pro would land somewhere around Rs 44,000 before local taxes and duties, while the smaller models should slot into the budget and mid-range segments where Amazon tablets have traditionally sold well during festival sales.

If you are considering a purchase through import, keep warranty support in mind. Amazon tablets have historically launched in India within a few months of the US release, often around Great Indian Festival season.

How the new Alexa tablets compare with old Fire tablets

The jump from Fire to Alexa tablets is bigger than the name change suggests. Here is what actually improved:

    • Apps: Fire OS offered Amazon’s Appstore only. The new tablets run the full Play Store with Google Mobile Services.
    • Build: Past Fire tablets used plastic bodies. The new lineup uses a premium aluminium unibody design.
    • Displays: The 12 Pro pushes a 120Hz, 2800 x 1840 panel with an anti-glare option, a level of screen quality Fire tablets never aimed for.
    • Assistant: Alexa Plus replaces the older Alexa experience, with deeper integration and a home screen shortcut.

If you already own a Fire tablet and use it mainly for video and reading, the new models will feel familiar. If you gave up on Fire tablets because of missing apps, this is the generation to look at again.
