Microsoft’s October 2026 Patch Tuesday has landed with security updates for a record-breaking 1,411 flaws, including one actively exploited zero-day and two publicly disclosed ones. The sheer count is the largest ever for a single Patch Tuesday, and admins in India should start testing the cumulative updates now.

What the October 2026 Patch Tuesday fixes

Out of the 1,411 flaws, 70 are rated Critical. That includes 57 remote code execution bugs, 11 elevation of privilege bugs, and 2 spoofing issues. The full breakdown by category looks like this: 677 elevation of privilege, 317 remote code execution, 254 information disclosure, 73 denial of service, 40 security feature bypass, and 28 spoofing vulnerabilities.

The count only covers flaws released by Microsoft on Patch Tuesday itself. Another 348 flaws were fixed earlier in October across Azure API Center, Azure App Service, Azure Event Grid, Azure SRE Agent, Mariner, Microsoft Bookings, Microsoft Dataverse, Exchange Server, and Partner Center. Microsoft credits its AI-based security platforms with finding and fixing more bugs each month, which is one reason the totals keep climbing.

    The three zero-day vulnerabilities

CVE-2026-96951 (Windows Shell Security Feature Bypass) is the actively exploited one. Attackers used command injection in Windows Shell to bypass the Mark of the Web protection, the flag Windows puts on files downloaded from the internet. Microsoft has not shared how the flaw was exploited in the wild or who reported it.

CVE-2026-108398 (.NET Framework Security Feature Bypass) was publicly disclosed before the patch. It can be abused to run unauthorised applications on affected systems.

CVE-2026-92707 (MessagePack-CSharp Denial of Service) was also publicly disclosed. It is rated Moderate and lets attackers disrupt services using the MessagePack-CSharp library.

Windows editions that lost support today

The same day brought end-of-support news. Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, have stopped receiving updates. The October 2026 monthly security update is the last one these editions will ever get. Microsoft has also warned that Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions stop receiving security updates next month, so organisations on 23H2 need to plan upgrades now.

What Indian IT teams should do first

Start with the actively exploited Mark of the Web bypass, since it touches every Windows machine that opens downloaded files. Push the cumulative update through WSUS, Intune, or your patch tool after a quick test ring, and prioritise machines used for email and browsing. The denial of service flaw matters mainly if your developers use MessagePack-CSharp in .NET services, so route that one to the dev team instead of the desktop queue.

Windows 11 users can grab the update from Settings, then Windows Update, then Check for Updates. Manual installers are available from the Microsoft Update Catalog for machines that update on a schedule.
