Google appears to be rolling out a major change that will let Gmail users switch their email address for the very first time.

Gmail account holders may soon get an upgrade that’s long overdue. It appears that Google is unleashing a major upgrade that will finally allow users to change their email addresses. Until now, once an @gmail.com address had been set up, it hasn’t been possible to switch things up with those wanting a different name needing to set up a whole new account.

However, as spotted by the eagle-eyed team at 9to5Google, it seems Google is planning to let users make major updates to their accounts. A support document even reveals how it will work with the old address, automatically forwarding emails to the new one.

This could be a very welcome update for anyone who set up an account in the past and no longer likes the name or has had changes to their circumstances.

“The email address associated with your Google Account is the address you use to sign in to Google services,” Google explained.

“This email address helps you and others identify your account. If you’d like, you can change your Google Account email address that ends in gmail.com to a new email address that ends in gmail.com.

“You will receive emails at both your old and new email addresses. Data saved in your account, including photos, messages, and emails sent to your old email address, will not be affected.”

Currently, there’s no information available on when the new feature will be released to users or in what regions. It’s also worth noting that Google’s current announcement has only been made via a support document in Hindi. That suggests those in India might be the first to get it.

Hopefully, Google will reveal more details soon, so stay tuned if you don’t like your current email address and want something new.
