Microsoft Azure Revenue Revealed at $33.2 Billion in One Quarter

Microsoft has finally put a dollar figure on Azure. For the first time, the company disclosed Azure’s quarterly revenue in actual dollars: $33.2 billion for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. The same report showed Microsoft booked $10 billion in revenue from OpenAI in the same quarter, and stretched its streak of record-breaking revenue to 10 quarters in a row.

This post covers the Azure number, the OpenAI relationship in dollars, what it means for the cloud race with AWS, and what to watch next.

Azure Revenue: The $33.2 Billion Question

For years, Microsoft reported Azure only as a growth percentage inside its Intelligent Cloud segment, leaving analysts to estimate the actual size of the business. That changed with the September 2026 quarter. Microsoft shared Azure’s actual revenue in dollars: $33.2 billion.

    • Quarter: The three months ending September 30, 2026
    • Azure revenue: $33.2 billion, the first dollar disclosure in the company’s history
    • Streak: Microsoft’s 10th consecutive quarter of record-breaking revenue
    • Why it matters: With Azure, Google Cloud and AWS now all reporting in actual dollars, the cloud market can be compared directly for the first time

Amazon reports its own earnings on Thursday, and analysts expect AWS to grow as well. AWS has been the largest cloud since the beginning of the market, and no one expects Microsoft to overtake it right away. But with all of the big players now reporting actual dollars, as TechCrunch puts it, the race is on.

Microsoft Made $10 Billion From OpenAI in One Quarter

The other headline number: Microsoft recorded $10 billion in revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI in the quarter ending September 30, including revenue-sharing payments. It is a striking snapshot of how much the two companies still depend on each other financially, even as they renegotiate the terms of the partnership.

    • October 2025 deal: Microsoft loosened its hold on OpenAI, giving the startup freedom to partner with other cloud providers. In exchange, OpenAI committed to buying an additional $250 billion in Azure services.
    • Ownership stake: Microsoft’s stake in OpenAI has declined gradually, from roughly 27 percent after the October 2025 recapitalisation to about 25 percent in June 2026 and 24 percent in September 2026. Microsoft did not specify what caused the dilution.
    • Revenue flows both ways: The $10 billion includes revenue-sharing payments, so part of what Microsoft books from OpenAI traces back to ChatGPT and API growth.

What the Numbers Say About the Cloud Race

Three things stand out from this report:

    • Transparency is now table stakes. Google Cloud disclosed $30.7 billion for its quarter (up 103 percent), Azure now reports $33.2 billion, and AWS reports Thursday. Buyers and investors can finally compare the three without spreadsheet guesswork.
    • AI demand cuts both ways. The same AI buildout that drives Azure revenue also drives Microsoft’s costs and its dependency on a single customer, OpenAI, to the tune of $10 billion a quarter.
    • Enterprise AI is real money. Microsoft also launched tools to show companies what their AI spending is buying, a sign that customers are starting to demand clarity on AI returns rather than just signing bigger deals.

Tips: What IT Buyers and Investors Should Watch

    • Compare cloud quotes with real market size now. With Azure at $33.2 billion a quarter, you can benchmark your own spend against a disclosed market number instead of analyst estimates.
    • Watch the OpenAI concentration risk. A $10 billion-a-quarter customer relationship is enormous. Any shift in OpenAI’s cloud strategy will show up in Microsoft’s numbers quickly.
    • Track the AWS comparison on Thursday. Amazon’s report will show whether Azure is closing the gap or whether AWS growth re-widens it.
    • Read the fine print on AI spending tools. Microsoft’s new cost-visibility tools for AI spending are worth evaluating if your organisation is scaling Copilot or Azure AI deployments.

Background: Why Azure’s Dollar Figure Matters

Cloud revenue reporting has been a guessing game for a decade. Amazon broke out AWS revenue early, but Microsoft folded Azure into its Intelligent Cloud segment and reported only a growth percentage, forcing analysts to reverse-engineer the size of the business from capacity hints and quarterly percentages. Google Cloud disclosed dollars, but until now the number two and number three players could not be compared cleanly.

That opacity had real consequences. Enterprise buyers negotiating multi-year cloud commitments had no market-size anchor. Regulators studying cloud concentration had to rely on estimates. And investors could not separate Azure’s actual performance from the rest of Microsoft’s server business. The $33.2 billion figure settles all of that in one stroke, and it also sets a baseline for future quarters, when growth rates can finally be checked against hard numbers.

It also reframes the AI infrastructure race. Every major cloud is spending heavily on data centres and GPUs to serve AI demand. Now that Azure’s revenue is visible, the return on that spending becomes measurable quarter by quarter, not just a narrative about future growth.

For Indian businesses in particular, the disclosure adds context to local cloud decisions. Azure runs multiple India regions and competes hard for enterprise and government workloads against AWS and Google Cloud. A hard revenue figure makes it easier for procurement teams to judge vendor scale, negotiate commitments and plan multi-cloud strategies on evidence rather than marketing claims.

    What Happens Next

Amazon’s Thursday report is the immediate checkpoint. If AWS grows strongly while Azure sits at $33.2 billion, the gap stays wide for now; if AWS comes in soft, the direct comparison suddenly looks much closer than analysts expected. Either way, the conversation has changed: cloud market share is no longer an estimate game. Beyond the numbers, the OpenAI relationship remains the thread to follow. As the startup’s compute commitments and revenue-sharing flows evolve, both companies’ quarterly reports will give unusually clear readouts on how the AI economy is actually being paid for.

    FAQ

What is Microsoft Azure’s quarterly revenue?

Microsoft disclosed Azure revenue of $33.2 billion for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. It is the first time the company has shared Azure’s quarterly revenue in actual dollars instead of only a growth rate.

How much revenue does Microsoft make from OpenAI?

Microsoft recorded $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments, in the quarter ending September 30, 2026. OpenAI has also committed to buying an additional $250 billion in Azure services as part of an October 2025 agreement.

Is Azure bigger than AWS now?

Not yet. AWS has been the largest cloud provider since the market began, and Amazon reports its quarterly numbers on Thursday. Microsoft’s $33.2 billion Azure figure is the first direct comparison point, and analysts expect AWS to grow in its own report.

How much of OpenAI does Microsoft own?

Microsoft’s ownership stake has declined gradually, from roughly 27 percent after the October 2025 recapitalisation to about 25 percent in June 2026 and 24 percent in September 2026. Microsoft did not specify what caused the dilution.

What does Azure revenue mean for cloud prices?

Bigger disclosed revenue does not directly change pricing, but it shows where demand is strongest. With AI workloads driving growth across all three clouds, expect competition on enterprise AI services rather than deep discounts on basic compute.
