Britain’s broadband has been put through its paces and there’s one very clear winner.
Homes wanting the best broadband speeds, reliability and consistent quality might want to think about switching over to Virgin Media. The popular UK Internet Service Provider (ISP) has just come out on top in the latest test from the team at Opensignal. In fact, it won every single category, including Download Speed, Upload Speed, Video Experience and Consistent Quality.
“Amid the UK’s ongoing transition to full-fibre networks, Virgin Media has the strongest overall broadband experience across all measures that we track,” explained Principal Analyst, Andrey Popov.
“This reflects the capabilities of Virgin’s upgraded cable-to-fibre network and sets it apart from providers operating primarily over the Openreach wholesale platform. Virgin leads by a wide margin in both Download Speed (187.8Mbps) and Reliability Experience (747 points).”
Coming second overall was Vodafone, with this ISP also getting high scores across all categories. Vodafone benefits from a dual-network strategy uncommon among broadband providers, as it operates across both the Openreach and CityFibre networks. Most ISPs use a single platform to beam the web into homes, but it seems Vodafone has the edge by using two different suppliers.
Other ISPs worth a mention include BT, which came third in categories such as Consistent Quality and Download Speed. Sky was also named for its Video Experience, with the provider coming second in this category.
So what about the other end of the table? Coming bottom of the league was Three. This ISP scored the lowest for Consistent Quality, Upload Speed, Video Experience and Reliability Experience. TalkTalk also suffered when it came to download speeds, with this ISP averaging 55.1Mbps – that’s compared to Virgin, with a score of over 180Mbps.
