Xiaomi launched the 17T in India on Tuesday, bringing its Leica-co-engineered camera system and the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra chipset to the Indian market. The phone starts at an aggressive price point aimed squarely at Samsung and OnePlus.

Xiaomi 17T Price and Variants
The Xiaomi 17T launches in two configurations in India:
- 8GB RAM + 128GB storage: Rs 29,999
- 12GB RAM + 256GB storage: Rs 32,999
Pre-orders are live on Flipkart with the first sale scheduled for next week. Xiaomi is offering an additional Rs 2,000 exchange discount for buyers trading in older smartphones.
For context, the Samsung Galaxy A56 starts at Rs 30,999 in India, while the OnePlus 13R begins at Rs 39,999. The Xiaomi 17T undercuts both on price while matching or exceeding their camera specifications.
Camera System: The Leica Difference
The headline feature is the Leica-tuned triple camera setup on the rear. Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica, which started with the Xiaomi 13 series, has matured significantly. The 17T features:
- 50MP main sensor (Sony IMX906) with OIS and f/1.7 aperture
- 50MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and OIS
- 8MP ultrawide with 120-degree field of view
Leica has tuned the color science for two distinct modes: “Leica Authentic” and “Leica Vibrant.” The Authentic mode aims for natural colors with the characteristic Leica look that emphasizes contrast and muted tones. Vibrant mode produces punchier images more typical of smartphone processing.
The front camera is a 32MP shooter with auto-focus, which is a step up from the fixed-focus front cameras that many phones in this price range use.
Dimensity 8500 Ultra Performance
The MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra is built on TSMC’s 4nm process and features ARM Cortex-A720 performance cores. In benchmarks, it performs close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which was a flagship chip just two generations ago.
Real-world performance should handle everything from heavy multitasking to demanding games like Genshin Impact at high settings. The chip also supports WiFi 7 and 5G SA/NSA connectivity across all Indian bands.
Display and Build
The 17T uses a 6.67-inch AMOLED display running at 1224 x 2712 resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches 1800 nits, which makes outdoor visibility solid even under direct sunlight. The display supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content.
The phone ships with Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2.0 based on Android 15. Xiaomi has committed to 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security patches, which lags behind Samsung’s 4+7 policy but matches what OnePlus offers.
Battery and Charging
A 5,000mAh battery powers the 17T, with 67W wired fast charging included in the box. Xiaomi claims a 0-100% charge time of around 38 minutes. There is no wireless charging at this price point, which is standard for the segment.
Battery life should be competitive with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones given the efficiency of the Dimensity 8500 Ultra. The 4nm process helps keep power consumption reasonable even during heavy gaming sessions.
Competition and Market Position
Xiaomi is positioning the 17T as a camera-first phone at a mid-range price. The Leica partnership gives it a marketing edge that Samsung and OnePlus cannot match in this segment, since both companies reserve their best camera tuning for their premium flagship lines.
The bigger question is whether Indian consumers will pay Rs 29,999 for a Xiaomi when the brand has historically been associated with budget phones. The 17 series represents Xiaomi’s push upmarket, and the 17T’s pricing suggests the company is willing to sacrifice margin to build credibility in the premium space.
Xiaomi has also confirmed that the 17T Pro, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, will launch in India later this quarter at a higher price point.
