Google September 2026 Spam Update Done Rolling Out

Google has confirmed that its September 2026 spam update has finished rolling out. The update started on 24 September around 12:00 pm ET and completed on 8 October 2026 at 4:37 am ET, taking almost 14 days to fully roll out. For Indian website owners and bloggers, this is the fourth spam update from Google in 2026 and the slowest one to complete.

Spam updates target pages that try to manipulate search rankings with thin content, cloaking, link schemes and similar tricks. Google says this was a normal spam update with nothing new in how it works, but the rollout itself was unusual. Earlier spam updates in 2026 took about two days. This one ran for two full weeks.

What Google said about the update

Google posted about the update on its Search status dashboard. The note said the September 2026 spam update applies globally and to all languages, and that the rollout may take up to two weeks to complete. The dashboard was later updated to confirm the rollout was complete as of 8 October 2026. Google’s help documentation on spam updates remains the reference for what the company considers spam.

Because the update covers all languages and all regions, Indian sites publishing in Hindi, Tamil, English and other languages were all in scope. Local news sites, affiliate blogs and e-commerce pages all saw movement during the rollout window.

Google Search ranking volatility lasted almost two weeks during the September 2026 spam update

    Where the ranking volatility hit

Tracking tools recorded three waves of volatility. The first came a day after the announcement, on 25 September and through that weekend. A second blip appeared around 30 September. The final and sharpest wave ran between 4 and 7 October, right before the update completed.

If your site’s traffic swung during those dates and has now settled, this spam update is the most likely reason. Sites that were not hit can relax for now, though Google runs spam updates regularly. The June 2026 and August 2026 spam updates were the previous two this year.

What Indian site owners should do now

Start with Google Search Console. Check the Search Performance report for the 24 September to 8 October window and compare it with the previous two weeks. Look at queries and pages that lost impressions. If a page dropped, review it against Google’s spam policies: scaled content abuse, expired domain abuse, hidden text and link manipulation are the usual triggers.

Avoid panic rewrites. Google has said some sites that do not spam can still get caught in a spam update. Fix clear policy violations, remove auto-generated pages published at scale, and file a reconsideration review only after real changes are live. Fresh, well-researched content written for readers remains the safest play for Indian publishers heading into the festive season traffic spike.

    FAQ

What is the Google September 2026 spam update?

It is a Google Search update that targets spammy pages such as scaled thin content, cloaked pages and link manipulation. It started on 24 September 2026 and applies globally and to all languages.

How long did the September 2026 spam update take to roll out?

Almost 14 days. Google began the rollout on 24 September and marked it complete on 8 October 2026, much slower than the two-day rollouts seen earlier in 2026.

How do I know if my site was hit by the spam update?

Compare Google Search Console traffic between 24 September and 8 October against the previous period. Sudden drops in impressions or clicks during the three volatility waves point to the update.

How many spam updates has Google released in 2026?

Four so far. The June 2026, August 2026 and September 2026 spam updates have rolled out this year, with the September update being the slowest to complete.

Will my rankings come back after a spam update?

They can recover once policy violations are fixed and the next update cycle runs. Clean up scaled content, hidden text and bad links, then keep monitoring the site over the coming weeks.
