AI Agents Are Getting Blocked by Shopping Websites

Personal AI agents like Meta’s Muse, Instinct, and ChatGPT’s Dots are starting a new wave of consumer AI. They do more than answer questions. They book flights, make dinner reservations, and order groceries on your behalf, without you needing to set up anything technical. But the websites on the other side of the request are increasingly saying no.

    Amazon is blocking Meta’s Muse

The most notable case so far is Amazon, which began blocking Meta’s Muse AI agent from its retail site. That means the agent can no longer browse the catalogue or make purchases there. The block is deliberate, and it puts Amazon at odds with the direction Meta is pushing with its personal agents.

    The Walmart problem is different

Walmart is a different story. The retailer is officially partnered with Muse, as announced at Meta’s Connect developer conference in September, and it wants to be available inside AI agent experiences. Yet users keep reporting that Muse cannot complete purchases on Walmart’s site. The problem appears to be the human verification check that pops up on the page. If that click-to-verify step gets interrupted, the check fails and the agent is booted out. The result is frustrating for everyone: the shopper blames Walmart, Walmart points to its bot defences, and the agent simply gives up.

    Airlines are also saying no

Flight booking is one of the main use cases being positioned for personal agents, but many users report airlines rejecting their agents’ requests outright. In some cases the block is intentional. In others, it is a side effect of traditional anti-bot systems built to stop spam and scalping. The user cannot tell the difference, which is exactly the problem.

An open standard is in the works

Industry partners including Meta, Walmart, Stripe, Sierra, Genesys, Rocket, NICE, and Decagon have started working on an open standard for how AI agents communicate with businesses. The protocol aims to separate good bots acting on behalf of a real user from the bad ones, with a focus on agent-to-agent communication for commerce. Until something like that ships, the current human-verification tools we use to keep websites safe will keep clashing with the agent-first web.

    FAQ

Why do websites block AI shopping agents?

Some retailers block agents on purpose to control their sales channels. Many other blocks are accidental, caused by anti-bot and human-verification systems that treat AI agents like malicious bots.

Which AI agents can shop for you right now?

Meta’s Muse, Instinct, and ChatGPT’s Dots are among the personal AI agents that can browse stores and place orders. Availability depends on each website allowing the agent in.

Why can’t Muse buy from Walmart even though they are partners?

The human verification check on Walmart’s site can interrupt the agent’s session and fail the check, so the agent gets blocked even though Walmart officially supports Muse.

What is the new standard for AI agents and businesses?

Meta, Walmart, Stripe, and other partners are building an open protocol that defines how AI agents talk to businesses, so legitimate user agents can be separated from spam and malicious bots.
