A fresh leak suggests the Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will be the first Samsung phones to offer DC dimming. The feature reduces display flicker and is easier on the eyes, and Samsung fans have asked for it for years. Even the current Galaxy S26 Ultra still uses traditional PWM for brightness control.

What is DC dimming and why it matters

PWM, or Pulse Width Modulation, is the usual way a phone screen adjusts brightness. The display flickers the light source on and off very fast, and your eyes read the result as a dimmer screen. It works, but it is really a trick built on how human vision behaves. People who are sensitive to flicker can get eye fatigue and headaches from PWM screens, especially at low brightness in a dark room.

DC dimming takes the direct route instead. It changes the voltage supplied to the light source, so there is no flicker at all. The hard part is doing this on modern displays that also support variable refresh rates. A hybrid approach is often needed, where medium and high brightness levels use DC dimming while very low brightness falls back to PWM. Xiaomi flagships already offer adaptive refresh with optional DC dimming on some models.

The wider Galaxy S27 display split

DC dimming is only one part of a bigger S27 display story. According to the leak, the S27 Pro and S27 Ultra will use Samsung’s latest M16 OLED material formula, while the regular Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus will get the older M14+ material. Samsung Display is already gearing up for mass production of these panels.

The Privacy Display feature that debuted on the Galaxy S26 Ultra is also staying, but only on the Pro and Ultra models. What is still missing is proper hardware 10-bit colour support. Some competitors already offer 12-bit colour, and Samsung is expected to keep 8-bit panels with dithering on the standard models. Pricing for the Galaxy S27 series will be announced at launch, which is expected in early 2027.

What this means for buyers in India

Indian buyers spend hours on their phones at night, on trains and in bed, so flicker reduction is not a small thing. If the leak holds, the S27 Pro and S27 Ultra will be the safer pick for sensitive eyes. Apple iPhones do not offer true DC dimming either, only a “smooth PWM” mode in settings, so Samsung would gain a real advantage here. The base Galaxy S27 may miss out, which is worth keeping in mind before the launch.

    FAQ

Which Galaxy S27 models will get DC dimming?

According to the leak, only the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will offer DC dimming, and likely in a hybrid form that switches to PWM at very low brightness levels.

What is the difference between PWM and DC dimming?

PWM adjusts brightness by flickering the display on and off quickly, which can cause eye strain for sensitive users. DC dimming changes the voltage to the light source instead, so the screen dims without any flicker.

Does the Galaxy S26 Ultra have DC dimming?

No. The Galaxy S26 Ultra still relies on traditional PWM for brightness control, which is why the S27 leak has drawn so much attention.

What OLED material will the Galaxy S27 series use?

The S27 Pro and S27 Ultra are tipped to use Samsung’s M16 OLED material formula, while the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus will use the older M14+ material.

When will the Samsung Galaxy S27 launch in India?

Samsung has not confirmed dates yet. Based on earlier launches, the series is expected in early 2027, with Indian pricing to be announced at launch.
