AMD Invests $5 Billion in Anthropic for AI Infrastructure Deal

    AI data center infrastructure

AMD has agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of a broader infrastructure agreement covering tens of billions of dollars in AI computing systems. The deal, announced on July 23, 2026, pairs a direct equity investment from AMD with a massive hardware order from Anthropic for AMD’s Instinct MI450-series accelerators.

    Deployment Details

Anthropic will deploy up to two gigawatts of computing capacity using AMD’s MI450 chips. The first gigawatt is scheduled to begin deployment in the first half of 2027. AMD’s investment is tied to Anthropic meeting specific deployment milestones, though neither company has disclosed the exact conditions.

The agreement does not require Anthropic to use AMD’s investment to pay for the systems. Instead, it combines two separate arrangements: an equity commitment from AMD and a hardware purchase agreement from Anthropic.

    AMD’s Growing AI Infrastructure Portfolio

This deal follows AMD’s earlier infrastructure agreements with other major AI companies:

    • OpenAI (October 2025): AMD agreed to supply systems supporting up to 6GW of capacity and issued warrants allowing OpenAI to acquire roughly 10% of AMD. The warrants vest as deployment, commercial, and share-price conditions are met.
    • Meta (February 2026): An agreement covering up to 6GW of GPU capacity, also with performance-based warrants tied to shipment and purchase targets.

Each deal has a different structure. The Anthropic deal involves a direct equity investment, while the OpenAI and Meta agreements give those companies rights to acquire AMD shares when conditions are met. The common thread is AMD tying financial incentives directly to hardware deployment milestones.

Why This Matters for the AI Chip Market

NVIDIA still dominates the AI accelerator market, but AMD’s strategy of combining large hardware orders with equity arrangements has quickly made it a serious competitor. By aligning its financial interests with customer deployment goals, AMD creates a feedback loop: more deployed hardware means more AI capabilities for its partners, which in turn drives more revenue for AMD.

Anthropic’s choice of AMD over NVIDIA for this expansion also signals that hyperscale AI companies are increasingly willing to diversify their chip supply chains. The MI450 series represents AMD’s latest competitive offering in the AI training and inference space.

    AMD Anthropic Deal FAQ

How much is AMD investing in Anthropic?

Up to $5 billion, tied to Anthropic meeting specific deployment milestones.

What chips will Anthropic use from AMD?

AMD’s Instinct MI450-series accelerators, deployed across up to 2GW of computing capacity.

When will the AMD-Anthropic deployment begin?

The first gigawatt is scheduled for deployment in the first half of 2027.

How does this compare to AMD’s deals with OpenAI and Meta?

AMD’s OpenAI deal covers 6GW with warrants for ~10% of AMD. The Meta deal also covers 6GW with performance-based warrants. The Anthropic deal is structured as a direct equity investment instead of warrants.
