Here is the full picture: release details, cast, story, what critics say, box office collection so far, and when the film is expected on OTT.

Release Date and Launch Details
Godzilla Minus Zero is a 2026 Japanese kaiju film produced by Toho and Robot Communications. It is a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One (2023) and the 39th Godzilla film ever made. Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer, director, and visual effects supervisor.
- Languages: Japanese and English
- Runtime: 135 minutes
- World premiere: New York Film Festival, September 26, 2026
- Japan release: November 3, 2026
- US release: November 6, 2026, in 3,254 theaters
The US release is the second widest ever for an Asian production, behind only Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle (3,315 screens) and ahead of Pokemon: The First Movie (3,043 screens). It is also the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX. Trade reports in India, including Business Standard, placed the India release on November 6, the same day as Ramayana: Part 1, with IMAX screens getting divided between the two films.
Full Cast
Ryunosuke Kamiki leads the film as Kōichi Shikishima, and Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Ōishi. Several Minus One cast members reprise their roles:
- Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima
- Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi
- Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda
- Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Miou Tanaka return in their earlier roles
- New additions Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa, and Jun Kunimura join the cast (character names are under wraps)
Story Summary
Minus One ended on a careful, human-scale note, and Minus Zero widens the battlefield. The story is set in 1949, as Japan is rebuilding after the war. Shikishima and Noriko are raising the young war orphan Akiko, while Kenji Noda now leads a Large-Scale Disaster Response Bureau. A meteorite crash brings something far worse than a space rock: an extraterrestrial creature described as a chimera and hydra-like being, nicknamed Ghidorah in early material. As it evolves into a golden three-headed King Ghidorah that fires gravity beams, a regenerated Godzilla rises to meet it. That premise gives away the setup only. The third act is best left unspoiled.
What Critics Are Saying
Early reviews are positive, with most of the praise going to the visual effects.
- The Seattle Times calls it “a roaring good sequel” in its review headline.
- Koimoi’s roundup of first reactions says critics are calling the film “an emotional kaiju spectacle with stunning visual effects”.
- MovieWeb ran with “New Godzilla Epic Set to Stomp Major Box Office Records”.
- Review aggregators note that critics consider the visual effects superior to Godzilla Minus One, which itself won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Early audience ratings reported from Japan hover around 4.1 stars, and full critic scores are expected to settle as more reviews land through the opening weekend.
Box Office Collection
Japan day 1 (November 3): Japanese box office trackers put the opening day at around ¥910 million (about US$5.8 million), which trade reports call the biggest opening day for any live-action film in Japanese history.
On a franchise level in dollar terms, Godzilla Minus Zero posted the biggest opening day ever for a Godzilla film, moving ahead of Godzilla Minus One (about $3 million), Shin Godzilla (about $2.2 million) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (about $2 million), as per Koimoi’s comparison.
United States (November 6): The film collected about $6 million in Thursday previews (Deadline). Trackers expect a $25 million to $30 million opening weekend (Koimoi and Variety estimates). For comparison, Godzilla Minus One opened to $11.4 million in the US. The records in play: Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle holds the biggest Japanese film opening in the US at $70.6 million, while Pokemon: The First Movie holds $31 million for a three-day weekend. TheWrap reports Godzilla Minus Zero could become only the fourth non-English film ever to top the US weekend chart.
India day 1: India numbers will be updated in Rs crore as trade trackers publish them. The film shares screens with Ramayana: Part 1, so the India split will be worth watching over the weekend.
OTT Release: Where to Watch
No streaming deal has been officially announced yet, and box office trackers still list the OTT details as not available. Godzilla Minus One streamed on Netflix after its theatrical run, so expectations point to a Netflix window for Godzilla Minus Zero as well. Going by recent Japanese theatrical to streaming timelines, an OTT release is expected around the first quarter of 2027. Treat that window as expected, not confirmed. We will update once Toho announces the digital partner.
Tips: Booking Tickets and Choosing a Format
- Book IMAX shows early. The film is the first Japanese production shot for IMAX, and those screens are being shared with Ramayana: Part 1 in India.
- Check the audio format. Your booking app will list which shows run in the original Japanese audio and which run in the dubbed version available in your city.
- Watch Minus One first if you can. The sequel continues directly from its ending, and the emotional payoff depends on knowing those characters.
- Keep an eye on the weekend numbers. A record-breaking US opening could push the film into wider Indian screen counts from week two.
Godzilla Minus Zero box office collection day 1
The film earned about ¥910 million (US$5.8 million) on day one in Japan, the biggest opening day for a live-action film in Japanese history. In the US it collected around $6 million in previews, with a $25-30 million opening weekend expected.
Godzilla Minus Zero OTT release date
There is no confirmed OTT release date yet. Godzilla Minus One streamed on Netflix, so a Netflix release is expected around the first quarter of 2027. Nothing is official so far.
Godzilla Minus Zero cast
Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Miou Tanaka return from Godzilla Minus One. Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa, and Jun Kunimura are new additions.
Is Godzilla Minus Zero better than Godzilla Minus One?
Early reviews say the visual effects top the predecessor and the sequel delivers on emotion and scale. Full review scores are still landing, but first reactions out of Japan and the New York Film Festival are strongly positive.
