WhatsApp May Block Logins on Outdated Android and iOS Phones

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a measure that stops users from logging in if their phone runs an outdated version of Android or iOS. The change is currently being tested with a limited number of accounts on both platforms. Affected users see a screen asking them to update the device software before they can get back into the app.

What the new login screen shows

According to WABetaInfo, some Android and iOS users are seeing a new screen at login that asks them to update their phone’s operating system first. The screen also shows where to check the current software version. Checking for the update is not optional for affected users. They have to install the latest available software build through their device settings before WhatsApp lets them log back in.

    Why WhatsApp wants updated phones

The change appears to target users running older versions of Android or iOS, making sure those devices carry the latest security fixes. End-to-end encryption protects messages in transit, but it can do very little if the phone’s operating system itself has unpatched vulnerabilities. Forcing a software update closes that gap. The requirement is being rolled out server-side, so there is no separate WhatsApp update to install. WhatsApp has not said which exact operating system versions will be affected.

Unofficial WhatsApp Web clients get a warning

Separately, WhatsApp is reportedly testing a warning for people who use third-party apps to access their accounts on the web. The warning can appear in the Linked Devices section and asks users to switch to the official WhatsApp Web client. Unofficial clients have been linked to account bans and malware in the past, because they sit between your phone and the web interface with no security review from WhatsApp.

    Other security features in testing

WhatsApp is also said to be working on Scam Alerts and Restricted Chats, on top of the login restriction. For now, the software update requirement appears limited to a small number of users, and it is not yet clear when it will roll out more widely. If your phone has pending system updates, installing them now is the safe move.

    FAQ

Will WhatsApp stop working on old Android phones?

WhatsApp is testing a login restriction that requires the latest device software on Android and iOS. Older phones that cannot install new system updates may eventually lose access, but the test is limited to a small number of accounts for now.

Why is WhatsApp blocking outdated devices?

Outdated operating systems carry unpatched security flaws. WhatsApp wants affected devices updated so that its end-to-end encryption is not undermined by vulnerabilities in the phone’s software.

Do I need to update WhatsApp or my phone’s software?

Your phone’s software. The restriction is rolled out server-side, so users must install the latest Android or iOS update through device settings before logging back in.

What happens if I use unofficial WhatsApp Web clients?

WhatsApp is testing a warning in the Linked Devices section that asks such users to switch to the official WhatsApp Web client. Unofficial clients can put your account at risk of bans and malware.
