EA pulls plug on The Sims spin off but leaves final gift to game’s fanbase

Fans of the Sims Mobile are being advised to spend their unused in-game currency after the game’s developer announced that the game will be pulled from app stores

It’s a sad day for Sims fans. EA has announced that it’s game over for The Sims Mobile, which has been available for several years.

The Sims Mobile launched for iOS and Android in 2017, delivering a free-to-play Sims game largely similar to the main series. But, after seven years of support and more than 50 updates for the game, the developer revealed that the title has now received its final update and will be sunsetted in three months’ time.

The exact date and time for the sunset is January 20, 2026 at 13:59 GMT, meanwhile the team shared a detailed timeline of what players can expect in the lead up to the game’s termination.

Over the next few months, Maxis is hosting a series of events in the game to give players one last thing to look forward to and to help them get the most out of their remaining gameplay, including in-game treasure hunts, limited time quests and “sweet treat showdowns”.

This follows the release of a final update earlier this week giving unlimited “energy” (a previously earnable or purchasable feature) to all players “to help them make the most of their time”. Additionally, all Build Mode and Create A Sim content will be unlocked for all players from 6th January.

Although, there is one detail that those who own the game should take note of. Once the game is taken down, existing downloaders won’t be able to access it offline. Instead, it will be completely inaccessible for everyone – meaning any progress and new content you unlock up to that time will be lost.

It’s also no longer possible to purchase packs or spend real money within game, but existing SimCash, Simoleons, and Tickets can be used until 20th January 2026. Unspent currency is not eligible for a refund.

In a blog post announcing the change, the team wrote: “First, we want to say thank you. The Sims Mobile and The Sims community as a whole are full of creativity, kindness, and imagination. You’ve amazed us with your stories, builds, and Sims.

“We’re proud to have shared this journey with you, and as a token of our appreciation, we’ve prepared a few surprises as we head into TSM’s final chapter.”

However, all is not lost for Sims mobile-players. Sims Freeplay is a similar Sims-style mobile app which remains available for download on iOS and Android.
